Da Nang Airport to Expand Domestic Terminal with VND 11.3 Trillion Investment

Da Nang International Airport, a key tourist gateway in central Vietnam, is set to undergo a significant renovation and expansion of its domestic terminal (T1). The Da Nang City People's Committee has approved the plan, with a total investment of approximately VND 11.3 trillion (around $70 million). This project is expected to nearly double the airport's annual passenger handling capacity to 14 million. The project will be led by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV). According to the announced plan, over VND 1.3 trillion of the total investment will cover costs for previously completed construction. The expanded T1 terminal will utilize over 165,000 square meters of land, with an additional 42,000 square meters to be acquired for expansion. The design includes the construction of approximately 96,000 square meters of new floor space to modernize the passenger processing lines. In addition to the main terminal, ACV will invest in supporting infrastructure such as elevated roads, M&E technical areas, wastewater treatment plants, a multi-story car park integrated with commercial services, parking lots, and internal traffic systems. These infrastructure developments are expected to enhance operational efficiency and the passenger experience. The project is scheduled for completion within 41 months. Following investment preparation procedures, construction is slated to begin in August 2027, with the expanded section expected to be operational by January 2029. The entire renovation of the existing terminal is targeted for completion by August 2029. Earlier, in May, ACV commenced the expansion project for the international terminal (T2), with an investment of nearly VND 1.5 trillion (approximately $9 million). Upon completion, T2 will increase its capacity to handle 6 million passengers annually, aiming to alleviate congestion and maintain 5-star service standards. Under Vietnam's one-party system, infrastructure development is a crucial pillar of national economic growth strategy. Modernizing airports and seaports in major cities is vital for attracting foreign investment and promoting tourism. The expansion of Da Nang Airport aligns with Vietnam's goal to significantly enhance its air transport capacity by 2030. In its relations with China, while facing tensions over issues like the South China Sea, Vietnam maintains deep economic ties and pursues a balanced foreign policy. Such infrastructure investments not only stimulate the domestic economy but also signal Vietnam's ambition to establish itself as an international logistics hub.
