Cambodia and Myanmar Pledge to Enhance Cooperation Against Transnational Crimes

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held bilateral talks with Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing at the Peace Palace on the afternoon of September 11, exchanging views on combating technological fraud. Following the discussions, both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation between Cambodia, Myanmar, and the region to more effectively combat transnational crimes, particularly human trafficking, drug smuggling, and cybercrimes. According to a press release, after exchanging views, Prime Minister Hun Manet and President Min Aung Hlaing discussed and pledged to increase cooperation between Cambodia, Myanmar, and the region to more effectively combat transnational crimes, especially human trafficking, drug smuggling, and cybercrimes. President Min Aung Hlaing described Cambodia as a "good friend, close friend, and a friend who has always supported Myanmar," both within the ASEAN framework and globally, particularly during Cambodia's tenure as ASEAN Chair in 2022. Furthermore, Prime Minister Hun Manet and President Min Aung Hlaing discussed and exchanged views aimed at promoting and strengthening bilateral cooperation in several priority sectors. These include economy, trade, and investment, tourism, security and national defense, education and human resource development, religious affairs, and combating technological fraud, as well as mutual support within regional and global frameworks. Following the meeting, the Cambodian Prime Minister and the President of Myanmar witnessed the signing of four cooperation documents between the governments of Cambodia and Myanmar. These include: 1) an agreement on the elimination of double taxation concerning income tax and the prevention of tax evasion and avoidance; 2) an agreement on the promotion and mutual protection of investments; 3) an amendment to the agreement on cooperation in the cultural sector; and 4) a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of information and media.
