Vietnam's 'Heart and Responsibility' in Search for Fallen Soldiers' Remains

On July 11, at Le Thi Rieng Park in Ho Chi Minh City, a delegation from the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense paid tribute to heroes and martyrs and inspected the search and collection of fallen soldiers' remains. This initiative is considered a crucial undertaking, signifying respect for the numerous sacrifices made during the establishment and unification of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Even decades after the end of the Vietnam War, many unidentified remains persist, and their collection and identification are not only the fervent wish of the bereaved families but also a national priority for reconciliation and historical closure. General Nguyen Trong Nghia, leading the inspection, described the remains collection as a "campaign from the heart," emphasizing the importance of approaching this task with the "heart and responsibility of a soldier." This goes beyond mere physical collection, serving as a message to the nation, especially the bereaved families, that the state has not forgotten past sacrifices. In recent years, the Vietnamese government has increased its budget and resources to accelerate the identification of remains, utilizing advancements in DNA testing technology. Efforts are being made with public-private cooperation, including the postal service's involvement in transporting DNA samples from relatives. At Le Thi Rieng Park, 13 sets of remains were recently discovered and collected, highlighting the ongoing significance of this endeavor. Under Vietnam's one-party system, the nation's historical narrative and national integration are often embodied in showing respect for the sacrifices of past revolutions and wars. The collection and identification of fallen soldiers' remains play a vital role in shaping national identity and fostering citizen loyalty.
