Vietnam Military Enhances Information Gathering and Tech Use for Fallen Soldiers' Remains Collection

Vietnam's military is set to strengthen its information gathering channels and the application of science and technology to advance operations for the collection and identification of fallen soldiers' remains. This initiative is part of a national "gratitude" campaign, aiming to expedite the return of lost soldiers by encouraging the participation of every citizen. Recognizing that information is crucial for operation execution, the Party Committee, Command, and Operation Steering Committee of Military Region 2 (Quân khu 2) are focusing on expanding information sources. Witness testimonies, old records, and discovered relics can all serve as vital clues. Consequently, relevant agencies are conducting thorough document research and interviews with former soldiers and local residents to pinpoint burial sites. Provincial military commands are meticulously reviewing past battle records to determine the number of fallen soldiers and initial burial locations. In addition to traditional media and social networks, the campaign includes soliciting information through SMS messages. By July 2026, 1,207 pieces of information were received, with 532 being screened. Of these, 51 pertain to Military Region 2, while 481 have been transferred to other regions for further verification. Although direct information on burial sites remains limited, the expansion of information channels has fostered a sense of collective responsibility and awakened memories held by the populace. Moving forward, the military will prioritize three key areas: First, strengthening the leadership of Party organizations and clarifying the responsibilities of commanders. Second, achieving breakthroughs in information collection, verification, and processing by continuing diverse outreach and public awareness efforts through media, social networks, SMS, correspondence, cultural activities, and encounters with historical witnesses. Special emphasis will be placed on urgently recording the testimonies of elderly witnesses in audio and video, linking them with geographical data. Third, promoting the flexible and creative implementation of operation plans. These efforts are solidifying the trust of fallen soldiers' families and the public in Vietnam's northwestern region, demonstrating that even in challenging circumstances, the journey to bring back lost soldiers can continue with strong political will, scientific methodologies, and the cooperation of society as a whole.
