Meralco to Refund P9.5 Billion in Overcollections to Customers
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has ordered Manila Electric Company (Meralco) to refund approximately P9.5 billion in overcollections to its customers over six months. This move is expected to reduce monthly electricity bills by about P117 for an average household.
MANILA, Philippines — A typical Meralco household may see its monthly electricity bill fall by about P117 as the utility refunds P9.5 billion in overcollections to more than 8 million customers. The Energy Regulatory Commission ordered Meralco to implement the refund over six months or until the full amount has been returned to customers, the STAR reported. Residential customers are expected to receive a refund rate of P0.5861 per kilowatt-hour. For a household consuming 200 kWh a month, this translates to a bill reduction of about P117.22. Across all customer classes, the refund is equivalent to an average rate of P0.3448 per kWh. The P9.5-billion refund covers amounts Meralco collected from customers beyond its authorized charges.
