Phnom Penh Intensifies Mosquito Eradication Efforts to Combat Dengue Fever
Phnom Penh is intensifying mosquito eradication campaigns to prevent the spread of dengue fever during the rainy season. Efforts include spraying adulticides in the Chbar Ampov district to promote public health. The El Niño phenomenon's potential to raise temperatures further increases the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, prompting calls for individual and community participation.
Phnom Penh is continuously implementing mosquito eradication activities to prevent the spread of dengue fever during the rainy season and promote public health. Specifically, mosquito adulticides have been sprayed in the Chbar Ampov district. This operation was carried out under the direction of Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng, prioritizing public health concerns for citizens. In collaboration with the Phnom Penh Municipal Health Department and district authorities, specialized officials conducted mosquito adulticide spraying in Prek Pra commune, Chbar Ampov district, on the night of July 8, 2026. The Phnom Penh administration's efforts to control and eliminate mosquitoes align with the Ministry of Health's directives and reminders regarding dengue fever prevention during the rainy season and the timely referral of patients to hospitals. The Ministry of Health has warned that the rainy season generally leads to an increase in stagnant water, which serves as breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes. Furthermore, Cambodia, like other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, is experiencing the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, which could lead to rising temperatures. This situation may increase the number of Aedes mosquitoes and the incidence of dengue fever, necessitating active participation from individuals, families, and communities. Research indicates that Aedes mosquitoes prefer to inhabit areas with stagnant water, such as discarded tires, coconut shells, glasses, plastic containers, abandoned jars, water tanks, flower vases, table leg receptacles, cabinets, and cups, all of which create breeding sites and shelter for mosquitoes. Aedes mosquitoes tend to hide in dark places or areas with limited sunlight. Therefore, the Ministry of Health urges citizens and all levels of authorities to participate in efforts to reduce, monitor, and prevent mosquito breeding by adhering to the slogan: "I and my family are exemplary families because my house and my residence are free of mosquito larvae." It is crucial to implement intervention measures with a high sense of responsibility to protect the health of individuals, families, and communities. Mr. NG Mean Heng, Director of the Phnom Penh Municipal Health Department, also appealed to the residents of Phnom Penh to participate in eliminating mosquito breeding sites.
