Dong Thap Tightens Fishing Vessel Management to Combat IUU Fishing

Dong Thap province in Vietnam is enhancing its fishing vessel management as part of a broader effort to combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing. This initiative is crucial for promoting a sustainable marine economy and aiming for the removal of the European Commission's 'yellow card' warning. The province, with its long coastline and abundant inshore fishing grounds, has long identified the marine economy as a key growth driver. However, increasing fishing pressure and destructive practices have presented significant management challenges. Community-led self-management initiatives are now being implemented as an effective solution. Alongside the continued implementation of comprehensive anti-IUU fishing measures, Dong Thap has proposed that the Government promptly introduce policies to support fishermen in switching livelihoods and decommissioning nearshore fishing vessels to conserve natural fisheries resources. This aligns with Vietnam's nationwide efforts to strengthen the fight against IUU fishing. Notably, Ca Mau province, one of Vietnam's largest fishing centers, also considers combating IUU fishing a top political priority and has reported positive results in fisheries management and law enforcement from recent efforts. These measures are vital steps for Vietnam to enhance its credibility in the international seafood market and ensure the long-term development of its fisheries sector.
