Cambodian Insurance Sector Urges Youth to Fill Top Leadership Roles

In Cambodia's insurance sector, efforts to cultivate future leadership are gaining momentum. Financial experts are encouraging local youth to enhance their expertise in the insurance field and actively seize opportunities to ascend to leadership positions, such as CEO roles in large international insurance companies operating within the country. Mr. Bou Chanphirou, CEO of the Insurance Regulator of Cambodia (IRU), pointed out that while many students graduating in finance possess general knowledge of finance and banking, they often lack in-depth understanding of the insurance sector. He urged Cambodian youth to deepen their studies in this rapidly growing field, with the prospect of becoming top leaders in international insurance firms in Cambodia in the future. He noted that opportunities to become senior managers remain a priority if local human resources possess sufficient capabilities. "Our future goal is to have Cambodian nationals as top leaders and CEOs of insurance companies," Mr. Bou Chanphirou emphasized. He added that foreign companies also seek local talent who deeply understand the domestic culture and context. Hiring foreign executives incurs high costs, whereas utilizing local experts offers numerous benefits, including a better understanding of customer preferences and improved company profitability. Mr. Phon Narith, Rector of Acleda Business School, agreed with the expert's assessment, stating that there are practical examples to support the view. "I believe we can do it, and the future will be even more prosperous!" he asserted. He explained that investors consider development and growth potential, and that developing with efficient spending requires utilizing local management, which can reduce costs by three to five times compared to hiring foreign experts. Currently, there are approximately 39 to 40 insurance companies in Cambodia. According to IRU officials, a small number of local experts are already holding leadership positions in large foreign companies operating in the country. The Insurance Regulator of Cambodia (IRU) and Acleda Business School have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation, develop human resources, and enhance expertise in the insurance sector. Through this MoU, Acleda Business School will develop courses that integrate foundational and specialized insurance subjects into higher education levels. Mr. Bou Chanphirou stated that Acleda Business School is the fifth university with which the IRU has signed an MoU to collaborate on training insurance professionals, enabling students to seize growing career opportunities and become future leaders.
