Thailand to Boost SME Support for ESG Compliance Amid Supply Chain Exclusion Risks

The Thai government is urgently establishing a support system involving relevant agencies to address the lagging compliance of domestic Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with international Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards. This initiative is based on the current reality where compliance with ESG standards has become indispensable in global supply chains. Companies unable to meet these standards face a high likelihood of serious repercussions, including exclusion by business partners and loss of opportunities for new transactions. The Ministry of Commerce plans to provide comprehensive support for SMEs to meet these international demands, including offering expertise, technical assistance, and, where necessary, support for fundraising. Specifically, the provision of ESG consulting services and training programs to promote the transition to sustainable business models are under consideration. This government initiative is founded on the recognition that strengthening the capabilities of SMEs is essential for Thailand's sustained economic growth and the maintenance and enhancement of its international competitiveness. Addressing ESG is expected to go beyond mere compliance, potentially leading to improved corporate brand image and the creation of new business opportunities.
