Cambodia Observes Rise of Chinese Robot Tech Amid US-China Tech Rivalry

Cambodian media outlet Koh Santepheap Khmer has reported on the remarkable advancement of Chinese companies in the field of humanoid robot development, citing a recent report from the LexisNexis legal research platform. According to the report, six out of the world's top ten innovative humanoid robot companies are Chinese, significantly outnumbering their US counterparts. Notably, Chinese firms Fourier, AgiBot, LimX Dynamics, Pudu Robotics, and Unitree Robotics secured the top five positions, with Leju Robot ranking ninth. In contrast, US companies Figure AI, Apptronik, and Agility Robotics were ranked sixth, eighth, and tenth, respectively. The report indicates that China is leading in humanoid robot technology innovation, evidenced by a surge in patent registrations over the last decade. It is projected that by 2025, China will hold 63% of the global patent value in robot structural design, while the United States will account for only 11%. This technological progress is further intensifying the technology competition between China and the United States. Recently, the US administration banned the import of foreign-made humanoid and quadrupedal robots, citing national security concerns. In response, China has criticized this measure as an exploitation of national security issues to pressure Chinese companies and has warned of retaliatory actions to protect its interests. Cambodia maintains close economic ties with China and receives significant investment from the country. China's dominance in technological fields like robotics could potentially influence Cambodia's industrial upgrading and technology adoption in the future. Concurrently, the US-China tech friction may present Cambodia with strategic choices regarding technological reliance on either side or the maintenance of a neutral stance.
