Cambodian Opposition Leader Faces Defamation Appeal Hearing

Mr. Tav Vonnul, President of the Candlelight Party, has been summoned to appear before the Phnom Penh Court of Appeal on August 3rd for a hearing concerning a defamation case. The summons was issued on July 6th by Mr. Chea Met, Deputy Prosecutor General at the Phnom Penh Court of Appeal. The hearing is scheduled for 2:00 PM and will be presided over by the 11th Appellate Chamber, led by President Im Vanna, with Judges Hing Bunthon and Yun Sovann. Mr. Tav Vonnul, 72 years old, was previously convicted by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on July 25th, 2024. The court ordered him to pay a fine of 10 million Riel (approximately $2,500 USD) to the national treasury. Additionally, he was ordered to pay 6 billion Riel (approximately $1.5 million USD) to the lawyers representing the Royal Government of Cambodia, as compensation for damages to the reputation and honor of national leaders and the government. The charge against Mr. Vonnul is public defamation, allegedly committed in February 2024, under Article 305 of the Criminal Code. Mr. Vonnul has appealed the entirety of the Municipal Court's decision to the Phnom Penh Court of Appeal. This case is significant as it involves the leader of a prominent opposition party and touches upon issues of free speech and defamation within Cambodia's political landscape.
