Typhoon Inday, Southwest Monsoon Leave 20 Dead, Damage Infrastructure
The death toll from Typhoon Inday and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon has reached 20 in the Philippines, with infrastructure damage estimated to exceed P3.18 billion. Thousands of families are displaced and receiving assistance.
The number of reported deaths linked to Typhoon Inday and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon has risen to 20, although only one fatality has so far been validated by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). In its latest situational report issued Monday, the NDRRMC said the lone validated fatality was a 70-year-old man who drowned in Barangay Kipaypayon, Quezon, Bukidnon. Of the other reported deaths still undergoing validation, 10 were reported in Sarangani, six in Lanao del Sur, two in Bukidnon, and one each in Iloilo and Davao Occidental. The NDRRMC also said nine people were reported injured, of whom two have been validated, while 16 people were reported missing. Overall, some 146,000 families or 654,000 individuals have been affected by the enhanced Southwest Monsoon and Typhoon Inday in 683 barangays nationwide. Of those affected, more than 5,100 families or 20,100 individuals are in 162 evacuation centers, while 635 families or 2,453 individuals are being assisted outside evacuation centers. The weather disturbance also damaged 890 houses, including 277 that were destroyed and 613 that sustained partial damage. Initial estimates placed damage to infrastructure at P3.18 billion, while damage to other assets reached P50,000. The NDRRMC said 67 road sections and 13 bridges were affected, while 46 seaports remained non-operational, stranding 437 passengers, 231 rolling cargoes, and one vessel. Meanwhile, classes remained suspended in 413 cities and municipalities, while work was suspended in 48 local government units due to the effects of the weather. The government has so far provided P43.38 million worth of assistance to affected families. Typhoon Inday exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday, but continued to enhance the Southwest Monsoon, bringing heavy rains and flooding to several parts of the country. —AOL, GMA News
