Prabowo Orders Removal of Promotional Banners Damaging City Aesthetics

President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia has ordered the removal of promotional banners and billboards that are considered to be damaging the aesthetic appeal of cities. Interior Minister Tito Karnavian revealed this to regional heads during the "2026 Regional Government Achievement Appreciation Ceremony (Batch II Regional Kalimantan)" held in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. According to Minister Tito, during a meeting with the President a few days prior, President Prabowo urged both central and regional governments to collaborate on efforts to keep cities clean and beautiful. He specifically expressed concern that promotional banners and billboards are "uncomfortable and not beautiful." Many of these banners are made of fabric or PVC and ultimately become waste, contributing to environmental pollution. Minister Tito stated that it is possible to regulate and remove these banners through local regulations (Perda). The minister drew a comparison with developed countries, where such graphic banners are not displayed on streets or public spaces, and video trons (digital signage) managed by the government are prevalent. He suggested that Indonesia should move in a similar direction. Furthermore, Minister Tito explained that the central government is encouraging regional governments to optimize waste management from source to end, including household waste. He noted that waste should be "reduced, recycled, and reused," and while many regions are undertaking these efforts, some remain indifferent. He also emphasized promoting clean-up activities as a habit to create a safe and pleasant environment. Environmental management is also included in the award category of "Waste Management and Pleasant Environment," where Tana Tidung Regency, Bontang City, and South Kalimantan Province received accolades at the regency, city, and provincial levels, respectively. The award ceremony was organized by the Ministry of Interior to appreciate regional governments that have successfully implemented programs based on community needs.
