Vietnam breaks into global top 10 for mobile and fixed broadband speeds

Vietnam has entered the global top 10 for both mobile and fixed broadband speeds, according to the latest rankings from Ookla, the company behind the Speedtest measurement platform. In July, Vietnam's median mobile download speed jumped to 205.58 Mbps, a significant increase from 156.48 Mbps the previous month, lifting the country to 10th place globally. For fixed-line speeds, Vietnam achieved a median download speed of 307.11 Mbps, maintaining a strong global position at seventh worldwide. Despite a slight dip from June's 307.36 Mbps, this performance underscores Vietnam's robust digital infrastructure. While Ookla did not provide specific reasons for the acceleration, Vietnam emerged as the fastest climber in July's rankings, outperforming many countries that saw relatively flat growth. Other nations like Malaysia and New Zealand also registered notable gains, moving up to 19th and 25th respectively. Since the rollout of commercial 5G services by carriers in September 2024, nationwide speeds have trended upwards after years of plateauing. Data from the i-Speed testing platform, managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, corroborates this trend, showing domestic 5G speeds consistently rising to over 462 Mbps in July. Vietnam has historically been a strong performer in fixed broadband, frequently ranking among the global frontrunners. Internationally, Vietnam's mobile download speed of 205.58 Mbps is nearly double the global median of 109.73 Mbps. In fixed broadband, Vietnam's 307.11 Mbps is more than double the global median of 127.70 Mbps. These rankings are based on median download speeds, representing the midpoint of all test results. Actual user experiences may vary based on location and infrastructure. Ookla's Global Index aggregates rolling performance data from the preceding three months. Globally, the United Arab Emirates leads mobile speeds with 663.50 Mbps, while Singapore tops fixed broadband at 451.14 Mbps.
