Top Vietnamese Leader's State Visit to Canada, US to Boost International Standing

Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam is scheduled to undertake official visits to the United States and Canada, following his attendance at the high-level general debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). These visits are anticipated to further enhance Vietnam's international standing and role. The Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam stated that the visit would "create major political momentum," underscoring the significance of bilateral ties. Vietnam is currently Canada's largest trading partner within ASEAN, and building upon the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), economic relations are expanding into higher value-added sectors such as clean energy, critical minerals, advanced technology, and manufacturing. Furthermore, Professor Nguyen Thi Lien Hang, Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University, noted that the trip to the US will not only help to further deepen the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership but also affirm Vietnam's growing role and position at multilateral forums. Vietnam consistently pursues a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation, and development. This visit is expected to reaffirm the country's strong support for and commitment to multilateral cooperation, with the UN at its core. As Vietnam continues its economic growth, it also aims to play a constructive role in the international community. These high-level diplomatic activities by its top leader are seen as a strategic move in this direction. In other news, Vietnam is implementing its strategy for the development and application of atomic energy for peaceful purposes through 2035, with a vision to 2050, while preparing for its Ninh Thuan nuclear power projects. Separately, Vietnam and China have agreed on key cooperation priorities for border management, including combating cross-border crimes and facilitating customs clearance. Minister of Finance Katayama Satsuki of Japan affirmed that Vietnam-Japan relations have entered a new stage, with cooperation in finance, semiconductors, AI, critical minerals, and energy promoting mutual growth and regional peace. The Dien Bien delegation's working visit to Laos' Bokeo province aims to open new avenues for sustainable tourism growth and consolidate the strong ties between Vietnam and Laos. Da Nang city and Laos' Xekong province are coordinating to implement their memorandum of understanding on cooperation in education, healthcare, trade, and investment. Vietnam today brings its experience of transformation—from post-war reconstruction to economic integration and sustainable development—to multilateral cooperation, as noted by UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis. During a visit to Egypt, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Anh Tuan met with Egyptian ministers and co-chaired the 11th Vietnam-Egypt political consultation.
