Cambodia Prays for Peace and Development During Rainy Season Buddhist Ceremony

In a significant event for the Cambodian Buddhist community, parliamentarians and local officials gathered at Seiharattanaaram Pagoda in Takeo province to offer candles and donations to monks observing the Vassa (rain retreat) period. This annual ceremony underscores the importance of Buddhism as the state religion and a cornerstone of Cambodian society. Led by Madam Nin Saphon, Chair of the National Assembly's 9th Commission and a representative for Takeo province, along with Madam Nu Sovannary, also a representative for Takeo, the delegation presented essential items and monetary contributions to the monks. The event, held on Monday, July 6, 2026, saw participation from provincial leaders, civil servants, armed forces, and a large number of Buddhist followers and citizens. During her address, Madam Nin Saphon highlighted the Vassa period as a crucial time for monks and novices to deepen their understanding of Buddhist teachings and discipline. She noted that devout Buddhists traditionally support the monks during this three-month period, which coincides with the rainy season, by providing necessities such as rice, beverages, and other usable goods. She further explained that the Vassa observance requires monks to remain within the pagoda premises for the duration, refraining from long journeys, except in cases of critical family emergencies or important religious duties, with a stipulation to return within seven days. Madam Nin Saphon also emphasized the symbolic significance of the Vassa candles, stating that their light is believed to illuminate the nation's future, bringing prosperity and happiness through good deeds. Maintaining the candle's flame throughout the three months is a practice deeply rooted in faith, while also providing practical illumination for the pagoda at night. Reflecting on Cambodia's progress, she attributed the nation's advancements in both religious and secular spheres to the prevailing peace. This hard-won peace, she stated, was a result of the sacrifices made under the leadership of former Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who guided the country from conflict to development, fostering growth in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. She urged all citizens to actively protect and preserve this peace to ensure continued national progress under the government's 'Win-Win' policy. Concluding the ceremony, Madam Nin Saphon and her delegation presented the monks with one pair of Vassa candles, four bags of rice, four boxes of instant noodles, four bundles of canned fish, three boxes of mineral water, three boxes of beverages, a quantity of fresh fruit, and a monetary donation amounting to 3,620,000 Cambodian Riel (approximately $900 USD).
