Sumatran Elephants Trained for Human-Wildlife Conflict Resolution in Aceh

In Aceh Besar, Aceh, mahouts at the Saree Elephant Training Center are training domesticated Sumatran elephants to help manage human-wildlife conflicts. These elephants are prepared to assist in resolving issues arising from the presence of wild elephants in residential areas and plantations. The training center currently houses 27 domesticated elephants, which are integral to the efforts aimed at mitigating human-wildlife conflicts. Mahouts provide routine care to maintain the elephants' health and readiness for their role in conflict resolution. These trained elephants are specifically being conditioned to help guide wild elephant herds that encroach upon community settlements and agricultural lands. This initiative is crucial for ensuring the safety of both humans and elephants and fostering coexistence. In Aceh, human-wildlife conflicts have been on the rise due to population growth and development, leading to shrinking habitats for wild animals. Sumatran elephants, in particular, pose challenges due to their size and dietary needs, raising concerns about crop damage and infrastructure impact. The utilization of trained elephants, alongside traditional methods, is seen as a promising approach to more effectively manage these escalating conflicts.
