Vang Vieng Tourist Deaths: Vientiane Police Clarify Investigation Findings

Vientiane Province Police have publicly disclosed initial findings from their investigation into the sudden deaths of six foreign tourists in the popular tourist destination of Vang Vieng. The incident involved six foreign nationals who successively fell ill and died, including victims from the United States, Denmark, Australia, and the United Kingdom. The investigation began on November 14, 2024, following the confirmation of the death of an American male tourist staying at the Nana Backpackers Hostel in Vang Vieng District. Police seized items from a room at the hostel, including what appeared to be medication, Beerlao, Tiger Vodka, soft drinks, and mineral water. A note, possibly indicating suicide, was also reportedly found. During the course of the investigation, two Danish tourists staying at the same hostel also developed severe symptoms and died at a hospital in Vientiane. Subsequently, two Australian nationals and one British national were confirmed to have died under similar circumstances. Police acknowledged that conclusive medical causes of death have not yet been determined for five of the victims, as no post-mortem examinations were conducted. However, laboratory test results from the Food and Drug Research Centre under the Ministry of Health, along with blood sample analysis provided by the Australian Embassy from a hospital in Thailand, revealed that the vodka brand 'Tiger Vodka' contained methanol concentrations significantly exceeding Laos' national safety standards. This methanol contamination is considered a strong possibility as the cause of death. In response to the incident, authorities have ordered the Nana Backpackers Hostel to suspend operations. The hostel owner and 10 employees have had their passports confiscated and are barred from leaving the country until all legal proceedings are concluded. Colonel Khamfong of the Vientiane Province Police stated that the authorities will continue to collect information and evidence from both domestic and international sources, emphasizing their commitment to a transparent and impartial investigation. Relevant authorities also plan to maintain close cooperation with the respective embassies. Ensuring tourist safety is a significant concern for Laos, and this incident has heightened concerns regarding hygiene and food safety, particularly in areas with a high concentration of foreign visitors.
