PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya was hit by another round of monsoon weather on Friday afternoon, July 24, with heavy rain sweeping across the city from the afternoon into the evening and causing flooding on almost every major street and road. The intense downpour quickly overwhelmed drainage points in many areas, leaving roads covered with water and creating difficult conditions for motorists, residents and visitors. Low-lying areas experienced temporary flooding, with traffic slowing as vehicles navigated through waterlogged streets. One photo sent to Pattaya Mail by a reader showed flooding along Soi Buakhao, one of Pattaya’s busiest streets, with standing water affecting traffic and pedestrians in the popular area. The latest rainfall once again highlighted Pattaya’s ongoing struggle with flash flooding during the rainy season, despite continued efforts by city authorities to improve drainage systems and reduce water accumulation. Heavy rain began falling across parts of Pattaya during the afternoon before intensifying later in the day. Dark skies and strong rainfall disrupted normal activity, with some businesses and pedestrians forced to wait for conditions to improve. Local residents said flooding remains a recurring problem during periods of intense rainfall, particularly when large volumes of water arrive within a short period. Some areas can become flooded before drainage systems have enough time to clear the water. Pattaya authorities have previously carried out drainage improvement projects, including upgrades to underground pipes, canals and flood prevention infrastructure, but rapid monsoon storms continue to test the city’s ability to handle extreme rainfall. Weather officials have warned that Thailand remains in the rainy season, with monsoon conditions expected to continue bringing periods of heavy rain over the coming days.
