DILG Considers Human Trafficking Charges vs. Former Congressman Jing Paras

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is considering filing human trafficking charges against former Negros Oriental congressman Jing Paras. DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that Paras appears to be the "mastermind" connected to the "pimp" who outlined the plan and mentioned names. Remulla identified Paras as a "person of interest" and indicated that charges of human trafficking are being considered against him. This development comes amid an alleged scheme to frame high-ranking government officials using women. According to Remulla, the plot reportedly targeted not only Executive Secretary Ralph Recto but also himself, Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla, Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon, and other government officials. The alleged plot surfaced following the arrest of a talent manager by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), who was reportedly acting as a pimp. In response, Paras' legal counsel, Atty. Mark Tolentino, rejected Remulla's statements. Tolentino asserted that no court has found Paras guilty of any offense and argued that the government should present evidence in appropriate forums rather than through public declarations that could prejudice the investigation and the public against the respondent. Tolentino added that his client is willing to cooperate with all lawful investigative processes but will vigorously challenge any accusations based on speculation or untested allegations rather than competent, admissible, and independently corroborated evidence.
