Cambodian King Lifts Travel Ban on Kem Sokha, But Political Ban Remains
Cambodia's King has issued a royal decree lifting the travel ban on Kem Sokha, allowing him to leave the country. However, the prohibition on engaging in political activities remains in place. This decision follows a recommendation from Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Phnom Penh: His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia has issued a royal decree on July 24, 2026, granting a pardon to Mr. Kem Sokha, lifting the prohibition on his departure from the territory of the Kingdom of Cambodia for a period of five years. However, the prohibition preventing Mr. Kem Sokha from engaging in political activities remains in effect and has not been lifted. It should be noted that the royal pardon for Mr. Kem Sokha on July 24, 2026, was granted based on the recommendation submitted by Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia. Convict Kem Sokha, 72 years old, the former President of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), was sentenced by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to 27 years in prison for the crime of treason. On May 25, 2026, His Excellency Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, had previously pardoned convict Kem Sokha, releasing him from his 27-year prison sentence.
