Sara Duterte Initially Wanted Detention at Camp Crame, Says Interior Secretary

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte initially wanted to be detained at Camp Crame, the headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Quezon City, when an arrest warrant was issued last Friday, according to Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla. Remulla said that PNP personnel coordinated with Duterte’s camp shortly after the warrant was issued. "Why didn’t we arrest them? They wanted to be jailed here," he said at a press briefing at Camp Crame. However, Duterte’s camp eventually changed their minds and contacted them, saying they would proceed directly to the Quezon City court, Remulla added. The arrest warrant was issued in connection with a criminal complaint against Duterte over remarks she made threatening to have President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and then-House Speaker Martin Romualdez killed if she herself were killed. This development highlights the ongoing political dynamics within the Philippines.
