The Cambodian government has accused Australian broadcaster ABC News of being used for Thai propaganda following a report on an online scam hub within Cambodian territory, conducted under the escort of the Thai military. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, Tep Asnarith, expressed deep regret over the reporting by ABC News Australia, stating that the Australian broadcaster had become a tool for spreading "false information" and propaganda orchestrated by the Thai military. This criticism stems from an ABC News report that allegedly ventured into Cambodian territory to cover an online scam hub in the O Smach area. On June 28, ABC News Australia released a video report focusing on a building located on the Cambodia-Thailand border, identifying it as a major online scam operation. The video featured Thai soldiers escorting journalist Karishma Vyas to report on the operational site and detention facilities within the building. According to Tep Asnarith, the reporting by ABC News was "biased and unbalanced," constituting a violation of journalistic professional ethics and serving as a propaganda tool for Thailand. He stated, "The fundamental principle of journalistic professionalism is to report with balance, transparency, and impartiality. News gathering solely based on the arrangements and guidance of the Thai military, without seeking clarification from Cambodian authorities or citizens, and without giving the involved parties in the area a voice to express their opinions, creates biased reporting that does not reflect the true situation. This is unprofessional and irresponsible reporting." The spokesperson further emphasized that as a major international media outlet from Australia, ABC should have conducted thorough research and fact-checking before entering the border region. Allowing its name and cameras to be used to produce fabricated news according to Thai arrangements, with the intent to defame and create problems, devalues its own professional standing and turns it into a propaganda instrument for another country. He considered this report a violation of media neutrality, asserting that ethical media should not engage in activities that incite conflict, provoke, cause harm, or create instability in any country or region. "Therefore, entering Cambodian territory unlawfully in this manner to conduct reporting can create tension between the two countries, which is contrary to the social responsibility of journalists," he added. The Ministry of Information stated that the exercise of freedom of the press must go hand in hand with respect for international law, national law, and professional integrity and impartiality.
