Cambodia Aims for Deeper Economic Ties with Vietnam, Targeting $20 Billion Trade

PHNOM PENH, Sept 2, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia is seeking to deepen economic and trade cooperation with Vietnam as the two neighbours work toward raising bilateral trade to US$20 billion, Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said in a congratulatory message to Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung on Vietnam’s 81st Independence Day. Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two countries, describing their ties as rooted in good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long‑term stability. He expressed his desire to work closely with Le Minh Hung to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity. The message comes as Cambodia and Vietnam pursue their US$20 billion trade target. Bilateral trade reached US$11.33 billion in 2025, while trade exceeded US$1 billion in the first two months of 2026. Cambodia has also encouraged Vietnamese businesses to expand investment in the country. Both sides have identified trade, investment, transport connectivity, logistics and border facilitation as key areas for achieving the target. They are working to link the Phnom Penh–Bavet Expressway with Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City–Moc Bai route and simplify customs and immigration procedures to boost cross‑border commerce. Vietnam remains one of Cambodia’s largest trading partners, with both governments emphasizing stronger economic integration alongside their political and diplomatic ties. Officials said expanded investment, improved infrastructure and smoother border trade will be crucial to achieving the US$20 billion goal and further strengthening economic relations between the two neighbours.
