Cambodia Accelerates R&D Investment to Foster Youth Talent for Future Innovation

Cambodia is increasingly emphasizing the involvement of its youth and students in research and development as a crucial investment in the nation's future. This strategic focus is driven by the understanding that science, technology, and innovation are paramount to national competitiveness and sustainable development in the current era of rapid socio-economic advancement. Key Serey, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, articulated this perspective during the "Kinal Award" and "Golden Palm Award" ceremony held in Phnom Penh. He highlighted that countries investing in research and human capital possess a greater capacity to generate new knowledge, develop novel technologies, create innovative products, and devise solutions to societal challenges. For Cambodia, transitioning from reliance on external knowledge and technology to fostering indigenous development capabilities is of particular importance. "Therefore, creating opportunities for youth and students to participate in research is an investment in the nation's future," Serey stated. Oknha Dr. Hay Ly Eang, Chairman of the Kinal Foundation and CEO of PPM-Confirel, observed that the annual "Kinal Award" and "Golden Palm Award" programs consistently demonstrate the significant potential of Cambodian youth. He noted their ability to transform the country's heritage and natural resources into practical solutions for food security, health, and rural development. Since its inception in 2013, the "Kinal Award" has seen over 2,443 participants in 468 teams, with 39 teams (183 individuals) receiving awards. The "Golden Palm Award," launched in 2018, has attracted over 1,136 participants in 181 teams from 11 higher education institutions, resulting in 24 awarded teams (144 individuals). These achievements are lauded as testaments to the capability, creativity, and commitment of Cambodian youth in addressing societal issues.
