Ancient Shark Fossils Unearthed in Egyptian Desert, Revealing Past Marine Life

A remarkable discovery in Egypt's western desert has revealed that the arid landscape was once a vast marine environment. Recent paleontological research indicates that the now-barren Abu Tartur Plateau, located approximately 650 kilometers southwest of Cairo, was a shallow sea millions of years ago, serving as a habitat for at least seven distinct species of ancient sharks. The findings stem from the analysis of fossilized teeth collected from the area. A team led by paleontologist Tarek Yassin of Cairo University gathered 14 shark teeth from black and yellow phosphate layers within the Late Cretaceous Duwi Formation. These teeth exhibit a wide range of shapes, from slender and elongated to sharply curved and serrated, suggesting diverse feeding strategies among the species that coexisted in these waters. The analysis identified five new species, marking the first recorded instances of these sharks in the Abu Tartur region. Two of these are also new to Egypt. This identification was made by comparing the morphology and anatomy of the fossil teeth with published scientific descriptions and comparative specimens from museum collections. This discovery serves as a compelling example of how geological processes, such as tectonic plate movement and sea-level changes over geological timescales, can transform former seabeds into terrestrial landscapes.
