Over 1,600 Evacuated in Vietnam's Central Region Due to Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

Thanh Hoa Province in central Vietnam has experienced widespread flooding and severed transportation links due to record rainfall observed from September 13 to the early morning of September 17. In just a few days, precipitation in many areas of the province ranged from 300mm to 450mm, with some locations recording nearly 500mm, causing river water levels to rise to dangerous heights. This heavy rainfall has inundated thousands of hectares of agricultural land and affected numerous aquaculture farms. In some areas, residents have been isolated or forced to evacuate further. Meteorological authorities have warned that the rain is expected to continue on September 17, with the risk of flooding, flash floods, and landslides remaining high. In response, local governments and relevant authorities have activated emergency response systems, focusing their efforts on monitoring vulnerable areas and ensuring the safety of residents. They are issuing timely evacuation orders as needed, aiming to safeguard lives and minimize damage. Vietnam, under its single-party system, prioritizes economic growth policies. However, in recent years, extreme weather events, attributed to climate change, have become more frequent. Issues such as delayed infrastructure development and rapid urbanization are said to exacerbate the vulnerability during disasters. Furthermore, while deepening economic ties with China, Vietnam also faces geopolitical tensions, including in the South China Sea, making domestic stability a key challenge for the government.
