Thailand Once Claimed Readiness to Demolish Border Fence if JBC Decides, Cambodia Views Process as Not Smooth
Cambodia's Director General of Border Technical Affairs revealed that Thai military had previously claimed readiness to demolish a constructed border fence if definitive border measurements conflicted with it. Cambodia views this Thai action as not part of a smooth process.
Mr. Chheur Bora, Director General of Technical Affairs of the Border of the Secretariat of State for Border Affairs of Cambodia, stated that the Thai military had previously claimed that they would demolish the border fence they had constructed if definitive border measurements later conflicted with it. Mr. Bora considers this claim by Thailand not to be a smooth process. Speaking at a roundtable discussion on Thailand's unilateral fence construction between boundary pillars No. 52 and 54, on the border between Battambang province (Cambodia) and Chanthaburi province (Thailand), broadcast by national television on June 29, Mr. Chheur Bora said that even though Thailand's fence construction is within Thai territory, it is close to the border line, which could cause problems and affect future procedures in cases where the Joint Border Commission (JBC) between the two countries agrees to install additional concrete pillars between the French-era pillars. He added, "In the past, the Thai military has said that in cases where the JBC agrees to install border pillars that affect the fence built by Thai soldiers, they will be willing to demolish the fence. But for the Cambodian JBC, we do not want to see such a situation, as the willingness of Thai soldiers to demolish the fence is not a smooth process either." Mr. Bora further stated, "What we want to see and desire is that the JBC of the two countries agree first, and then we can build the fence, and it will not be too late."
