New German Ambassador Vows to Boost Cambodia's Economy and Attract Investors

Germany's new Ambassador to Cambodia, Silke Röfer, paid a courtesy call on Cambodia's Acting Head of State, Techo Hun Sen, on September 15, 2026, at the Peace Palace to present her credentials. Following the meeting, Senate Spokesperson Tith Thyra informed reporters that Ambassador Röfer pledged her utmost effort during her tenure to further strengthen bilateral relations. Ambassador Röfer specifically highlighted her commitment to promoting economic and trade relations between the two countries, with a particular focus on attracting German businesses to invest in Cambodia. In response, Acting Head of State Hun Sen acknowledged the importance of economy, trade, and investment as the "core" of bilateral ties and welcomed the ambassador's intentions. He also noted the existing trade relationship, stating that bilateral trade has reached approximately 3 billion dollars and is expected to continue increasing. Germany is a significant trading partner for Cambodia in the European region, and attracting German investment holds considerable importance for Cambodia's economic development.
