Floodwaters from the upper Mekong River flowing into Vietnam's southern Mekong Delta region have reached a record low, significantly below the average for many years. This situation is believed to be a combination of reduced rainfall due to the El Niño phenomenon and water storage at hydroelectric dams located upstream. Consequently, this year's flood season is predicted to arrive later than usual and with less water. The decrease in floodwater volume not only threatens the immediate water supply for agricultural production but also increases the risk of severe drought and rising salinity (saltwater intrusion) in the upcoming dry season. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the natural fishery resources carried from the upper Mekong River to the delta region with the floodwaters will also significantly decrease. The Mekong Delta is a major production hub for Vietnam, particularly for rice and seafood. This low water level could impact not only the regional economy but also Vietnam's overall food security. The Vietnamese government will need to continue monitoring water resource management and measures to mitigate the effects on agriculture.
