Army Soldier Wounded in Second Masbate Clash with Suspected NPA Rebels

A government soldier was wounded in a second encounter between government troops and suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Masbate on Wednesday, hours after two alleged communist rebels were killed in an earlier clash in the province. Col. Angelo Lutera, commander of the Army’s 903rd Infantry Brigade, said the soldier was injured during the firefight in Mobo town, Masbate. The soldier is currently receiving treatment and is in stable condition. Lutera said government troops encountered the armed group while on patrol, leading to the exchange of gunfire. Earlier on Wednesday, another clash in Mobo town resulted in the death of two alleged members of the communist rebels. The military is investigating the incidents, believing they were perpetrated by the NPA. The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been engaged in a protracted armed struggle against the government for decades. The Philippine government has been pursuing counter-insurgency operations against the NPA, particularly in rural areas.
