Vietnam, UAE Boost Defense Cooperation
Vietnamese Defense Minister Phan Van Giang met with UAE Undersecretary of Defense Ibrahim Nasser Mohammed Al Alawi on June 29, agreeing to further strengthen defense cooperation. Both sides confirmed their commitment to practical cooperation based on a Letter of Intent signed in 2025.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang hosted a reception for Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Defense Ibrahim Nasser Mohammed Al Alawi in Hanoi on June 29. Giang stated that the Vietnamese government, Ministry of National Defense, and the People's Army consistently attach importance to strengthening friendship and expanding cooperation with the UAE government, Ministry of Defense, and armed forces. He emphasized that this aligns with the legitimate interests of both peoples and contributes to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in each country, the region, and the world. The defense minister noted that defense cooperation plays an important role in building mutual trust and further promoting Viet Nam–UAE relations. In 2025, leaders from Vietnam's Ministry of National Defense visited the UAE twice, attending the Dubai Airshow 2025. During these visits, both sides signed a Letter of Intent on defense cooperation, laying a solid foundation for advancing bilateral defense cooperation to a new stage, in line with common understandings reached by their senior leaders and commensurate with the Viet Nam–UAE Comprehensive Partnership. Giang expressed hope that both sides would continue to promote Viet Nam–UAE defense cooperation in a practical and effective manner, focusing on delegation exchanges at all levels, training, participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations, military medicine, logistics, non-traditional security, and mutual support and coordination at multilateral forums. He also extended an invitation to the leadership of the UAE Ministry of Defense, as well as UAE defense industry groups and companies, to attend the 3rd Viet Nam International Defense Expo, scheduled to take place in Hanoi in December this year. Al Alawi, for his part, hailed the increasing role of Viet Nam on the global stage and expressed expectations that bilateral ties, in general, and bilateral defense cooperation, in particular, would be upgraded to a higher level. Vietnam, while maintaining its one-party system and pursuing economic growth, carefully manages its relations with China, which is expanding its regional influence. In this context, strengthening defense cooperation with Middle Eastern countries like the UAE can be seen as a strategic move to diversify Vietnam's foreign policy and enhance its security foundation.
