PH may achieve full electrification only by 2033 – lawmaker

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines may not achieve full electrification until 2033, five years later than the government’s target, Camarines Sur Rep. Arnie Fuentebella said Wednesday. Fuentebella said connecting remote rural areas to the electric grid could cost as much as P67 billion, with funding shortfalls potentially delaying the National Electrification Administration’s (NEA) rollout. He noted that the country’s electrification program has been facing delays due to the vast cost of extending power lines to far-flung villages and islands. Fuentebella urged the government to prioritize the electrification program and ensure adequate funding to meet the target date. “We need to accelerate our efforts to provide electricity to all Filipinos, especially those in remote areas, as it is crucial for their economic development and overall well-being,” he said.
