Drunk Driving Suspect Causes Fatal Accident After Being Woken by Military Police

A tragic traffic accident occurred in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on August 7th at approximately 2:40 PM at the intersection of Street 598 in Phnum Penh Thmey commune, Sen Sok district. A young man, identified as Treu Sakda, driving a black BYD vehicle (license plate: Phnom Penh 2CE-4874, 2025 model), along with other young passengers, was traveling south on Street 598 when he suddenly stopped at the intersection and began to sleep inside the car. According to witnesses, other passersby reported the unusual situation to the military police. Upon arrival, military police officers knocked on the car door to wake the driver. In response, the driver allegedly reversed his vehicle, colliding with two other parked cars (a Highlander and a Toyota) and then hitting a motorcycle. The impact resulted in injuries to a mother and her 13-year-old daughter. The mother sustained severe injuries, and the daughter was pronounced dead at the hospital. The vehicle that caused the accident became entangled with the motorcycle and continued to reverse, hitting the roadside curb and a guard post, rendering it immobile. The driver was immediately detained by the military police. Subsequently, Sen Sok district police arrived at the scene to manage traffic and contacted the land traffic police. The police took custody of the vehicle and the driver to process the damages and compensation. This incident highlights recurring issues of traffic safety in Cambodia's urban areas, particularly concerning drunk driving and reckless behavior.
