A particular focus is on instances where foreign individuals operating businesses in Thailand use Thai citizens as “nominees” to hold and manage assets under their own names. Such practices are susceptible to exploitation for money laundering and other illicit activities, posing risks to national security and economic stability. The government intends to tighten the criteria for citizenship applications, conducting more thorough investigations into applicants' identities, sources of funds, and contributions to Thai society. It has also indicated the possibility of re-examining existing citizens if there are suspicions of fraudulent acquisition.
