Hanoi is accelerating the construction of seven major bridges spanning the Red River, with several key projects targeted for completion before the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting. This infrastructure push aims to bolster the city's hosting capabilities and support Vietnam's economic growth. According to the municipal Transport Construction Investment Project Management Board, the city is simultaneously implementing seven projects: Tu Lien, Ngoc Hoi, Tran Hung Dao, Thuong Cat, Van Phuc, Hong Ha, and Me So bridges. Construction is being carried out on multiple fronts, focusing on bored piles, pile caps, piers, and superstructure works. Vietnam, under its one-party system, prioritizes economic development, with infrastructure being crucial for enhancing national competitiveness. This bridge construction initiative also aims to strengthen Vietnam's role as a hub within the ASEAN region. Economically, Vietnam is benefiting from global supply chain realignments and actively attracting foreign investment. In the first eight months of 2026, Hanoi alone attracted over $3.7 billion in FDI, a significant year-on-year increase, reflecting Vietnam's stable political climate and the government's efforts to improve the business environment. In its relations with China, while maintaining economic ties, Vietnam is diversifying its export markets to mitigate geopolitical risks. For instance, durian exports in 2026 were predominantly to China (95%), but efforts are underway to expand to other markets. This strategy aims to reduce over-reliance on the Chinese economy and enhance economic stability. The bridge construction projects represent concrete actions towards the clear goal of hosting the APEC summit, demonstrating Vietnam's infrastructure development capabilities and its ambition to host international events. Upon their scheduled completion, these projects are expected to significantly improve Hanoi's transportation network and enhance urban functionality. Source: VietnamPlus English
