Malaysian Armed Forces Chief Backs Cambodia's Peaceful Stance on Thai Border Dispute

PHNOM PENH, July 11, 2026 (KPT) – Malaysia’s armed forces chief has voiced support for Cambodia’s position that its border dispute with Thailand should be settled peacefully and in line with international law, during talks with Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen. General Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Haji Malek Razak bin Sulaiman met Hun Sen at the Senate’s Solidarity Palace in Phnom Penh on Saturday as part of an official visit. Senate spokesman Chea Thyrith said Hun Sen welcomed the trip as a boost to Cambodia–Malaysia ties, particularly in defence cooperation, and congratulated Malek Razak on his appointment. The Malaysian commander highlighted strong bilateral relations and noted discussions with Cambodia’s defence ministry on expanding military cooperation. Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for Malaysia’s role as ASEAN chair in facilitating dialogue on the border issue, citing progress under the chairmanship including the advancement of the AOT initiative. Samdech Techo Hun Sen reiterated Cambodia’s stance that the dispute must be resolved through peaceful means and international law. According to the Senate, Malek Razak praised Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s leadership and expressed respect for his role in Cambodia’s post‑conflict development. He also voiced support for Cambodia’s approach to resolving the border issue through dialogue. This meeting underscores the importance of regional stability and cooperation as Cambodia navigates border demarcation issues with its neighbors. Malaysia's endorsement is seen as a supportive gesture for Cambodia's diplomatic efforts to seek resolution through international engagement.
