CIDG Seizes P14M Worth of Suspected Smuggled Cigarettes in Zamboanga City

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Regional Field Unit 9, in coordination with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and Zamboanga City Police Station 11, intercepted suspected smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P14 million in Barangay Campo Islam before dawn on Sunday. According to a report from CIDG-9, operatives spotted suspicious vehicles in the area and, upon inquiry, discovered a large quantity of cigarettes. Investigations are ongoing to determine the types and origins of the seized cigarettes. This seizure is part of the Philippine government's intensified efforts to combat smuggling. Smuggled cigarettes not only lead to loss of tax revenue by bypassing legitimate channels but also harm the domestic tobacco industry and pose health risks. Zamboanga City, being a major port city in southern Philippines and a key maritime route to neighboring countries, is often susceptible to smuggling activities. This latest interception highlights the importance of enhanced law enforcement against illicit goods in the region.
