Philippine 'Saba' Bananas Make Debut in Australian Market

DAVAO CITY — The Department of Agriculture in the Davao Region (DA-11) reported on Wednesday about the first export shipment of Frozen Whole Steamed Saba (Cardava banana) to Australia on Sept. 22. The exportation was facilitated through the DA-11's Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD). In a statement, DA-11 regional technical director for operations Marie Ann M. Sy said the export was a "milestone" for the region's agri-fishery sector. "This is a testament to the quality of our produce and the dedication of our farmers," Sy said. The Saba banana, a staple in Filipino households, is known for its versatility and nutritional value. The frozen, steamed format makes it convenient for consumers and extends its shelf life, making it suitable for international markets. The DA-11 has been actively promoting local produce to international buyers through various trade missions and exhibitions. The successful export to Australia is expected to pave the way for more opportunities for other local agricultural products. "We are optimistic that this will encourage more farmers to engage in export-oriented production and contribute to the economic growth of the region," Sy added.
