Phnom Penh Governor Donates to 151 Temples and 5 Buddhist Halls for Buddhist Lent

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng, accompanied by his wife, Ms. Chea Sina, and officials from the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration, presented candles, cash, and various offerings to 151 pagodas and 5 Buddhist halls in the capital on the morning of July 27, 2026. The ceremony took place at Wat Chanth Bophoryvong, presided over by His Holiness Samdech Preah Pouthisart Noy Chhork, First Deputy Supreme Patriarch of the Kingdom of Cambodia, located in Samrong commune, Prek Pnov district. For each of the 151 pagodas and 5 Buddhist halls, Governor Khuong Sreng and his wife donated 300,000 Riel (approximately $75 USD), a pair of Buddhist Lent candles, 100 kilograms of rice, a set of Buddhist robes (sarong), 25 kilograms of sugar, one case of condensed milk (48 cans), five cases of soft drinks, five cases of mineral water, five cases of instant noodles, and one case of canned fish (100 cans). The Buddhist Lent ceremony, known as Vassa, is observed annually by Buddhists, starting from the first day of the waning moon of the month of Asanha to the full moon of the month of Assuj. This tradition involves monks staying in monasteries for three months of retreat and meditation. During this period, lay Buddhists traditionally offer food, robes, and other necessities to the monks. On this occasion, His Holiness Samdech Preah Pouthisart Noy Chhork offered blessings and good wishes to Governor Khuong Sreng, his wife, their family, and all the officials of the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration, wishing them the four blessings of Buddhism.
