VinFast VF 5 Dominates A+ Compact SUV Segment, Leading EV Adoption
VinFast's VF 5 electric vehicle has secured a dominant 74% market share in Vietnam's A+ compact SUV segment in the first half of 2026, selling over 20,000 units. As the segment's sole EV, it appeals to both individual buyers and service businesses.
VinFast's VF 5 has emerged as a dominant force in Vietnam's A+ compact SUV segment, selling over 20,000 units in the first half of 2026 and capturing approximately 74% of the market share. This significantly outpaces its closest competitor, the Kia Sonet, which sold 3,981 units for a 15% share. VinFast is establishing dominance in urban vehicle segments, both small and mid-sized, targeting individual consumers and service businesses. The VF 5, in particular, is solidifying its influence within the A+ class of high-riding vehicles. A key differentiator for the VF 5 is its status as the segment's sole pure electric vehicle (EV). The other four models in the segment – the gasoline-powered Kia Sonet, Toyota Raize, Hyundai Venue, and Suzuki Fronx – collectively sold 6,930 units in the first half of 2026, marking a 30.7% increase from the same period in 2025. This suggests that the VF 5's success is less about stealing market share from existing gasoline models and more about creating and capturing a new demand, especially from service-oriented businesses. However, VinFast's VF 5 saw a slight year-on-year decrease of 7.6% in sales compared to the first half of 2025. This dip might be attributed to the introduction of the Limo Green, a 7-seater MPV also aimed at the service sector, in the latter half of 2025, which could have fragmented the buyer pool. Among the gasoline models, the Kia Sonet continues to show resilience. A price reduction in March 2026 led to a nearly 60% sales increase compared to the first half of 2025, reaching 3,981 units. Despite this, its sales figures are a far cry from its peak performance, when it averaged thousands of units per month. Conversely, sales for the Toyota Raize and Hyundai Venue have declined year-on-year. Hyundai Thanh Cong, the distributor for Hyundai, is reportedly planning to replace the Venue with a new model in 2026 to boost sales. The Raize, meanwhile, has seen its appeal wane due to a lack of significant updates since its 2021 launch. The Suzuki Fronx, the segment's only coupe-styled offering, has failed to make a significant impact despite consistent price reductions in recent months. With 644 units sold in the first six months of 2026, it remains the lowest-selling model in the segment.
