Cambodia's Car Assembly Capacity Reaches 35,000 Units Annually Amidst Market Sustainability Concerns

Cambodia now possesses the capacity to assemble and distribute approximately 35,000 vehicles annually for its domestic market, excluding imported vehicles. At the official inauguration ceremony of the THAC Auto-Motive Manufacturing Co., Ltd. assembly plant and the GAC brand production line, Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that Cambodia currently has 15 automobile assembly plants, with 10 of them operational. Furthermore, two plants are not yet operational, and three are in the process of investment application or construction, representing a total investment of approximately $248 million. Given that Cambodia's domestic market comprises around 17 million people, Prime Minister Hun Manet has instructed the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and relevant institutions to study whether the number of assembly plants is sufficient for domestic demand and can ensure the sustainability of these factories. The Prime Minister urged relevant institutions to focus on supporting and protecting existing plants to maintain their "resilience." He emphasized that resilience means not just operating but also growing and developing. He noted that a situation where many plants open but subsequently close one after another is undesirable for Cambodia.
