Cambodia Launches 'Beautiful Home and Farming' Contest to Improve Displaced Families' Lives
Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture has begun data collection for a 'Beautiful Home and Farming' contest targeting displaced soldiers and their families in Battambang province. The initiative aims to promote hygienic living environments and boost agricultural productivity, with cash prizes for winners and a focus on improving overall community well-being.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has initiated data collection for a "Beautiful Home and Farming" contest targeting displaced soldiers and their families in Ron Chham village, Slakram commune, Svay Chek district, Battambang province. The initiative aims to promote hygienic living environments and enhance agricultural productivity. A team of specialists, led by Ms. Keo Kimoun, Chief of the Rubber Office, along with Mr. Phil Chaiya, Deputy Chief of the Agricultural Extension Office, and Mr. Hon Uon, an official from the Agronomy and Agricultural Productivity Office, visited the site to assess residents' housing conditions and potential. Ms. Keo Kimoun emphasized that this data collection is not merely a statistical exercise but a strategy to identify families actively improving their living environment and engaging in small-scale farming for livelihood enhancement. Through this field assessment, data was collected from a total of 34 households, divided into two target villages: 16 households in Banteay Meanchey Rith village and 18 households in Samaki village. The "Beautiful Home and Farming" initiative goes beyond a mere competition for aesthetic appeal. It aims to encourage displaced families to adopt hygienic living habits, orderly practices, and efficient use of land around their homes through cultivation or raising livestock, thereby ensuring food security and increasing household income. This data collection represents a crucial first step in ensuring accuracy in evaluation and providing additional technical support to citizens, in line with the government's policies to promote better livelihoods and social well-being. To transform difficulties into opportunities and further invigorate agricultural practices, His Excellency Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Head of the Royal Government Working Group for Battambang Province, along with his team, has launched an effective incentive mechanism: a "Beautiful Home and Beautiful Village" campaign conducted every three months. His Excellency stated, "This competition is established not only for aesthetics and hygiene but is a strategy to strengthen household food security and increase additional income for displaced persons." The campaign will involve meticulous evaluation to select three model households demonstrating excellent hygiene and leading agricultural activities, with substantial cash prizes awarded directly by the minister. The first prize is $3,000 for a beautiful, hygienic home with extensive, technically sound crop rotation around the premises. The second prize is $2,000 for good environmental management and active livelihood support through cultivation. The third prize is $1,000 for good participation in agricultural activities and environmental preservation. In addition to individual household competitions, a comprehensive "Beautiful Village" evaluation will also be conducted, offering support in materials and funding for the development of shared infrastructure within the entire Ron Chham village community.
