Elderly Man Dies After Jumping from Second Floor During Fire in Phnom Penh

An elderly man in his 60s has died after jumping from the second floor of a building during a fire in Phnom Penh. The incident occurred on August 17, 2026, at approximately 9:49 AM, near the Morodok Techo Bridge in Tonle Bassac commune, Chamkarmon district. According to local media reports, the victim, described as being over 60 years old, reportedly panicked upon seeing a fire erupt in front of his room and decided to jump from the second story. He sustained fatal head injuries upon impact and was pronounced dead at the scene. Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick smoke billowing from the second floor before the incident. Nearby residents attempted to extinguish the fire with extinguishers but were overwhelmed by the heat and smoke. They subsequently alerted the authorities, who dispatched fire trucks to the scene to prevent the blaze from spreading. Initial assessments by local police suggest that the victim, residing on the second floor where the fire started, jumped in an attempt to escape the flames, leading to his death. Following the incident, local law enforcement and forensic teams arrived at the scene to investigate and identify the victim. Efforts are underway to contact his family to claim the body for traditional funeral rites. Firefighting vehicles from the Phnom Penh Municipal Police, along with assistance from private company Borey Peng Huoth, were deployed to combat the fire, which was eventually extinguished.
