Mysterious Loud Noises in Bandung Confuse Residents

Mysterious loud noises have been heard across Bandung, Indonesia, and its surrounding areas from Friday night to early Saturday morning, causing confusion and unease among residents. The origin of these peculiar sounds remains a subject of speculation among the populace. Riva Dessthania, 32, a resident of the Arcamanik area in East Bandung, reported hearing intermittent booming sounds from midnight until around 2:00 AM. Initially, she feared it might be footsteps on her roof or an intruder. However, her concern was somewhat alleviated upon discovering through social media that many other Bandung residents were experiencing similar phenomena. "I heard the booming sound from 12 AM to 2 AM, quite intensely. The sound was long and intermittent," Riva told CNNIndonesia.com on Saturday (5/9). "Personally, I felt the sound was similar to faint footsteps on the roof, and the garden next to my bedroom window, so at first, I was afraid there was a thief. After checking social media, I found out that many Bandung residents were feeling the same thing." Similar experiences were shared by other residents. One user from East Bandung wrote on social media that they woke up around 1:00 AM to a sound that caused their bathroom window to vibrate. "I still can't sleep, I'm worried," they posted. Another netizen, @hadisutiono, also heard the booming sound until 2:00 AM WIB. "Yes, that's right... around 2 AM, I even went outside because I thought the neighbors were having a loud party," they wrote. Some netizens speculated that there might be military exercises happening near their homes. Wijayanto, Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), stated that his agency is still investigating the origin of the sound. "We are still investigating. The reported booming sound does not indicate any seismic activity. Based on BMKG's seismic monitoring and data checks, there was no earthquake activity in Bandung and its surrounding areas during that period," Wijayanto told CNNIndonesia.com on Saturday morning. He added that while there was lightning activity on Friday night and early Saturday morning, it was not intense enough to cause repeated booming sounds in the area. "BMKG's Lightning Detector monitoring data recorded lightning activity, but its intensity was low and did not show significant activity like that reported by the public," Wijayanto concluded.
