Cambodia Demolishes Illegal Structures Along National Road 5 for Traffic Safety and Aesthetics

In Kampong Chhnang province, specifically in Kampong Tralach district, concrete ramps, blocks, and iron structures that residents had illegally installed as access points to their homes from National Road 5 have been demolished by a joint team from the Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport and the district administration. This operation took place on July 2, 2026. According to Mr. Chhay Raphea, Director of the Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, these structures did not comply with technical standards and posed a risk of traffic accidents for motorcycles and cars entering and exiting residences from the national road. Furthermore, these installations detracted from the aesthetic appearance of National Road 5 and created a chaotic situation. The demolition was led by Mr. Chuor Chanrithy, Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport, in collaboration with Mr. Keat Mat, Deputy Governor of Kampong Tralach District, and involved teams and authorities working on both sides of National Road 5. Director Raphea noted that similar illegal structures exist in other populated areas, such as Prey Khmer market in Roluos Phier district and Ponley market in Boribo district, though not to the same extent as in Kampong Tralach district, where the volume was excessive and posed a significant traffic hazard.
