Poipet City Faces Widespread Flooding, Government Launches Emergency Intervention Plan

Poipet City in Cambodia's northwest is grappling with widespread flooding after continuous heavy rainfall and water flowing from neighboring Thailand caused a rapid rise in water levels along border rivers. As of September 24, 2026, at least 242 households have been affected by inundation, according to Colonel Paoun Seiha, commander of the 891st Border Guard Infantry Battalion. The flooding impacts six areas: Poipet, Ou Chrov, Kbal Koh, Kilometer 4, Samaki Market, and Sok San, affecting residents along the border. In response, the government has formulated an emergency intervention plan to address the escalating situation. On the morning of September 24, 2026, HE Pan Kham Bounthon, President of the Government Working Group for Poipet City, along with the Deputy Governor of Poipet City, district chiefs, the Director of the Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology, and relevant authorities, conducted an on-site inspection to assess the flood conditions firsthand. HE Pan Kham Bounthon sternly instructed local authorities and armed forces to prepare necessary equipment, means, and intervention forces for timely rescue and evacuation of citizens to safe grounds in case of an emergency or further significant rise in floodwaters. Additionally, the working group initiated drainage operations by opening water gates to mitigate the impact on citizens' livelihoods and property. However, rainfall continues, and the situation remains critical. The 891st Border Guard Infantry Battalion is actively disseminating information about flood risks to residents along the border rivers and maintaining readiness to assist citizens promptly.
