Last Survivors of Ferry Fire Arrive in Surabaya, Search Continues

A total of 62 victims of the KMP Mutiara Sentosa II ferry fire in the northern waters of Sumenep, Madura, arrived at the Gapura Surya Nusantara (GSN) Terminal, Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya, around 2:10 PM Western Indonesian Time on Tuesday (4/8). This group represents the last survivors to be evacuated from the unfortunate incident. Prior to their arrival in Surabaya, they had been temporarily evacuated to Masalembu Island. Observations at the scene showed the survivors arriving aboard the KN Masalembo. They consisted of adults, men, women, and children. Some appeared to be in less than optimal health, with some being carried and others transported in wheelchairs. Upon arrival at Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya, the passengers of KMP Mutiara Sentosa II were immediately directed by officials to the waiting area on the first floor of the GSN Terminal. They were accompanied by a medical team and a joint rescue team for further data collection and treatment. Officials also provided care and food to the survivors. Head of Basarnas, Air Chief Marshal TNI Mohammad Syafii, directly monitored the arrival of the survivors. He noted that the total number of evacuated victims had increased from the previous day's data to 238 people. "If yesterday we reported 233, the total update now is 238 victims," Syafii stated at the integrated post in the GSN Terminal, Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya, on Tuesday (4/8). Syafii explained that the newly arrived victims were passengers of KMP Mutiara Sentosa II who had been temporarily evacuated to Masalembu Island. "There are 62 victims we evacuated from Masalembu Island to Surabaya," he said. Furthermore, Syafii confirmed that the search and rescue operation for victims at the incident site is still ongoing, involving elements from Basarnas Surabaya. "The search operation is still being carried out. KN SAR 249 Permadi from Basarnas Surabaya is still conducting the operation. Of course, the operation will be adjusted according to the operational concept issued by the Basarnas Command Center at the head office," he added.
