Drunk Police Officer Crashes into Home, Causing Death and Injuries; Sent to Court

A tragic incident occurred in Battambang province, Cambodia, where a police officer under the influence of alcohol crashed his car into a residential home, resulting in one death and five injuries. The officer has been arrested and sent to court for legal proceedings. The accident took place around 9:50 PM on September 18th, in Kamchat village, Mean Chey commune, Samlot district. The police officer involved was identified as Suon Theon, 27, male, a police officer from the Mean Chey commune police post in Samlot district. Following the incident, the provincial police chief immediately ordered the arrest of the officer to ensure legal action. The suspect was transferred to court on September 21st, and judicial proceedings, including questioning, were ongoing on the morning of September 22nd. Men Bory, acting director of the Traffic Police Office, confirmed that the officer was detained as per the police chief's order and sent to court for legal action. He further stated that the officer was intoxicated at the time of the incident and caused severe harm to civilians. According to the incident report, the vehicle was speeding before swerving and hitting an ampel tree. It then ricocheted and struck a utility pole, causing it to fall and plunging the entire village into darkness. The vehicle did not stop and continued to crash into residents who were resting or gathered inside their homes, leading to the fatalities and injuries. The deceased was identified as It Heng, 66, male. The five injured individuals include: Te Sampors, 42, female (leg fracture); Beng Rin, 48, male (leg injury); Nhean Saray, 45, female (leg injury); Ruen Theon, 48, female (leg injury); and Than Sae, 44, male (head and arm injury). It was reported that three other passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the accident and were also reportedly intoxicated. After the incident, nearby residents rushed to the scene to assist the victims and prevent the driver from escaping. Photos from the scene showed significant damage to the front of the car, and the driver was observed to be staggering due to his intoxication. The police officer is currently under judicial proceedings, with ongoing questioning to determine legal responsibility for the accident that claimed one life and injured five others.
