Cambodia and Laos to Enhance Cooperation on Cyber Fraud Crackdown
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, met with Laos' Minister of Public Security, Vongkham Phanmany, who requested Cambodia's experience in combating cyber fraud. Both countries agreed to establish a permanent cooperation mechanism to counter such crimes.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, met with Laos' Minister of Public Security, Vongkham Phanmany, on June 29, 2026, during the 2nd Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Ministerial Meeting hosted by the Ministry of Interior. Minister Phanmany requested that Cambodia's specialized authorities share their experience in investigating and cracking down on cyber fraud crimes with Laos' specialized officials. Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha fully supported the request, stating that the Cambodian Ministry of Interior also intends to establish a permanent cooperation mechanism among Cambodian, Lao, and Vietnamese law enforcement experts to exchange information and share experiences related to preventing, combating, and cracking down on cyber fraud, which is a crime that is intricately linked with neighboring countries and globally. Minister Phanmany expressed his encouragement and congratulations to the Cambodian government, particularly the Ministry of Interior, for actively cleaning up this crime with notable results. He added that in Laos, cyber fraud criminals are currently trying to hide and commit crimes in small locations within local communities. Regarding this point, Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha stated that after large-scale operations, remaining criminals in Cambodia are now attempting to use new methods, such as renting small locations like guesthouses and ordinary citizens' houses to commit crimes. However, he emphasized that Cambodian authorities at all levels are proactively investigating and clearing out these small locations with the cooperation and information provided by local citizens. Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha also informed his Lao counterpart that to date, over 360,000 foreigners have been deported from Cambodia, including those who voluntarily returned to their home countries, after crackdowns found them involved in cyber fraud and other illegal activities within the country. The head of the Cambodian Ministry of Interior reiterated the Cambodian government's unwavering commitment under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet to eradicate this crime, restore Cambodia's reputation, and help save humanity worldwide. During the meeting, both sides also exchanged views on cooperation in preventing, combating, and cracking down on all types of cross-border crimes, especially drug trafficking, facilitating citizens living in border areas, cooperation and support for border demarcation, regional and global situations, and particularly the importance of organizing the 2nd Ministerial Meeting hosted by the Cambodian Ministry of Interior on this auspicious occasion.
